COMPOUND

There is only one campsite on the Canarian island of Lanzarote, situated on its southerly peninsula, the Punta de Papagayo.

The area forms part of a protected park called the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches, both a Natural Area of National Interest and Natural Monument. Awarded the status because of the scientific interest in representing geomorphological ancient volcanic edifices built and modeled in different climatic conditions. It has also been designated a Special Protection Area for the conservation of wild birds.

Recently the campsite has undergone some improvements, including the dominant security fence and barrier. My visit coincided at the point the site work was just being completed and before the visitors began to arrive – there was an air of expectation and perhaps a wonder of who these visitors were to be; confined in such a secure compound on a remote but spectacular part of the island.
