THE COOMBE

The Coombe lies in the English county of North Wiltshire, directly to the east of the village of Liddington. It is one of many unnamed Coombe’s that proliferate this part of England. These Coombe’s are distinctive features within chalk ridges, in this case, one that runs broadly through the south of England; south west to east. This particular section of the ridge is synonymous with what is described as Britain’s oldest road – The Ridgeway – which itself forms part of the longer ancient Icknield Way which runs from Salisbury Plain to East Anglia.

In geology terms Coombe’s are defined as naturally forming hollows or short valleys in the side of limestone uplands or chalk down lands in southern England. They are believed to have been formed through the action of ice during ice ages. Since their formation the distinctive terracing, known as terracettes, has formed by soil creep or erosion of surface soils exacerbated by the trampling of livestock such as sheep or cattle – the latter have a tendency to walk horizontally rather than vertically. The shift of their path and continued use results in exaggeratingg these patterns.
